Why Compost at Home?

There are tons of reasons to compost at home, especially if you are a home gardener or are planning on doing a little homesteading. But truthfully, it's one of the most effective things that we can do to drastically reduce our waste output, create resilient and healthy soil, address climate issues, and make you more self-reliant.

  1. By composting, we are able to reduce the amount of waste that is placed into landfills or disposed of using other waste management practices such as incineration. By designating your food scraps, yard clippings, leaves and other raw material to a composting practice, you can easily start making an impact yourself!

  2. Compost reduces the need for fertilizers and pesticides that may be harmful to you, your animals and the environment. At the same time, compost builds healthier soil, assists with erosion, helps water retention, and encourages your plants to thrive. These all sound like wins in our book!

  3. Composting requires very little effort, equipment or expertise to be successful and effective.

  4. It can even be fun!

So, before you toss those broccoli stalks, onion peels, and corn husks in the trash or down a disposal, consider the benefits of starting your own composting project instead. Since you are bound to produce the necessary materials as you live your day-to-day, why not put those scraps to use and benefit even more!
