While there may be some controversy over the means or tools in which you do so, I think we can all agree that some means of personal protection or self-defense are necessary for being self-reliant. Without the ability to protect yourself and your loved ones should a situation arise, you most certainly can't consider yourself self-reliant.
There are many options and ways available to us that can set us up for the best chance of success in the event of an emergency. We will explore some of those options below.
1. Firearms - Probably the most controversial implement of defense on this list, but also the most effective and most diverse. Not only can a firearm protect you and your family from hostile behavior from other people or animals alike, it can also assist in putting food on the table.
2. Bow and Arrows/Crossbow and Bolts - Similar to the firearms in the ability to defend yourself and loved ones at range, however not nearly as effective for that particular purpose due to how slow they can be to use without considerable practice. However, these can also assist in putting food on the table, which again is a big plus.
3. Pepper Ball Guns - This is a non-lethal option for self defense that we think is a pretty good choice for a couple of reasons.
One of those reasons, in fact, being the non-lethal aspect. In most cases, lethality is not necessary and the pain of impact and irritation of the pepper-ball mixture would likely be enough to successfully de-escalate the majority of situations while avoiding most of if not all of the legal troubles that can come with the use of lethal force.
Another good thing we can see from using this option, depending on your particular setup, you can equip yourself with the capacity to handle multiple assailants.
Additionally, pepper-balls can be fired into blind spaces where an assailant could be hiding. The pepper-balls will still explode on impact and inundate said space with the pepper-ball irritant, affecting any hidden within.
4. Tasers - Another non-lethal option on the list, but not one we are particularly fond of. Our reasons for tasers being a less than ideal choice mainly include;
Very limited if any range, and very limited uses depending on the system you are using. If you are using a contact taser, you need to be immediately within reach of your assailant for it to work, and this is obviously not ideal.
If you are using a projectile taser, you typically only have one or two shots, so you had better make them count. If there are multiple assailants, a taser is not going to be a great option at all.
5. Self-Defense Training - While this might be the last thing on our list, it certainly shouldn't be considered of any less importance! In fact, this may be the most important of all.
No matter what tools you intend to implement in your defense plan, you are going to need some degree of training in order to be efficient and effective. There are training programs for nearly every form of self-defense you could imagine, from firearms training to martial arts, and we strongly suggest you invest the time and resources to learn!
