If you are trying to be more self-reliant, there are plenty of good reasons to raise chickens, but one thing you will most certainly need is an enclosure of some kind, similar to this one. Chickens are vulnerable to a number of wild predatory animals, so make sure to put some protection around your valuable foul. This enclosure will also work for other small animals such as rabbits, quail etc.
